ABSTRACT Canopy opening is an important variable for understanding the regeneration of plant species and the floristic composition of forest environments. Smartphone applications have been created to estimate the openness and coverage of community structures and plant culture. These have the potential to replace conventional equipment such as the Densiometer due to accessibility and zero cost. However, measuring and recommending the use of these technologies to the forest environment is necessary. Thus, the present study aimed to evaluate these low-cost technologies for measuring the canopy opening / covering by comparing with the spherical Densiometer model A. Canopy openings were measured for each method at 55 points performing 4 readings per point on permanent plots in Araucaria Forest fragment. The means of the canopy opening measurements for each method were compared by statistical test. The results obtained were that the CanopyCapture application presented better results, not differing statistically from the Densiometer; CanopyCapture proved to be an intermediate alternative; Canopeo performed worse, with great variation and little precision in the results. It was possible to conclude that, for the proposed study model, only CanopyCapture has the potential to be used as a substitute for the Forest Densiometer, yet different studies are necessary to have greater reliability in the efficiency of this application in other forest formations.

RESUMO A abertura do dossel é uma variável importante para o entendimento da regeneração de espécies vegetais e na composição florística dos ambientes florestais. Aplicativos de Smartphones foram criados para estimativas de abertura e cobertura estrutural de comunidades e plantas, apresentando potencial de substituição de equipamentos convencionais como o Densiômetro, devido à acessibilidade e ao custo zero. Assim, o presente estudo teve por objetivo avaliar essas tecnologias de baixo custo para a mensuração da abertura/cobertura de dossel florestal comparando com o Densiômetro esférico modelo A. Foram medidas as aberturas de dossiês para cada método em 55 pontos realizando 4 leituras por ponto em parcelas permanentes em fragmento de Floresta Ombrófila Mista. As médias das medidas de abertura de dossel de cada método foram comparadas por teste de estatísticos. Os resultados obtidos foram que o aplicativo CanopyCapture apresentou melhores resultados não diferindo estatisticamente do Densiômetro; o CanopyCapture demonstrou-se uma alternativa intermediária; o Canopeo apresentou pior desempenho, tendo grande variação e pouca precisão nos resultados. Foi possível concluir que, no ambiente e modelo de estudo proposto, apenas o CanopyCapture possui potencial para uso como substituto do Densiômetro Florestal, ainda assim é necessários diferentes estudos para que se tenha uma maior confiabilidade na eficiência desse aplicativo em outras formações florestais.

Resumo A produção de serapilheira e sua decomposição desempenham um papel importante no ciclo do carbono terrestre e na qualidade do solo, sendo um processo crucial envolvido na produtividade e funcionamento do ecossistema. Compreender esse processo em áreas comerciais de pinus ou invasões de pinus é crucial para projetar o manejo florestal ou a restauração de ecossistemas. Conduzimos um estudo em uma plantação comercial de pinus (Pinus taeda L.) no bioma da Mata Atlântica para investigar (1) a contribuição da fauna do solo para a perda de massa da serapilheira; (2) a atividade alimentar da fauna edáfica na serapilheira dentro das estações do ano. As bolsas de decomposição com acículas de pinus (5 g, peso seco) foram preparadas como tratamentos de exclusão para a fauna do solo de diferentes tamanhos, variando o tamanho da malha (2 mm e 0,06 mm). As bolsas de decomposição foram removidas após 60, 120, 180, 240, 300 e 365 dias para estimar as taxas de decomposição. Bait laminas foram expostos sazonalmente e horizontalmente na superfície do solo para determinar a atividade de alimentação da fauna na serapilheira. Encontramos: (1) nenhuma diferença na perda de massa da serapilheira e na taxa de decomposição quando a macrofauna do solo e a maior parte da mesofauna foram excluídas; (2) a atividade alimentar dos organismos da serapilheira foi maior no verão, provavelmente estimulada por uma combinação de alta temperatura e umidade. Em plantios comerciais de pinus, podemos concluir que a ciclagem de nutrientes é mais lenta do que em áreas naturais, o que está relacionado às características das acículas, descritas na literatura. Nossos resultados indicaram que a macro e a mesofauna do solo desempenham um papel menor na decomposição da serapilheira em plantios comerciais de pinus, indicando que o processo de decomposição em tais povoamentos está mais relacionada à atividade dos microrganismos.

Abstract Litter production and its decomposition play an important role in the terrestrial carbon cycle and soil quality, being a crucial process involved in ecosystem productivity and functioning. Understanding this process under pine commercial stands or pine invasions is crucial to design forest management or ecosystems restoration. We conducted a study in a commercial pine plantation (Pinus taeda L.) under Atlantic Forest biome to investigate (1) the contribution of soil fauna to pine litter mass loss; (2) the litter fauna feeding activity within seasons. Litter bags with pine needles (5 g dry weight) were prepared as exclusion treatments for different sized soil fauna by varying mesh size (2 mm and 0.06 mm). Litter bags were removed after 60, 120, 180, 240, 300, and 365 days to estimate the decomposition rates. Bait lamina sticks were exposed seasonally and horizontally in soil surface to determine the fauna feeding activity on litter. We found: (1) no differences in litter mass loss and decomposition rate when soil macrofauna and most of the mesofauna were excluded; (2) feeding activity of litter organisms was higher in the summer, probably stimulated by a combination of high temperature and rainfall. In commercial pine stands, we can conclude that the nutrient cycling is slower than in natural areas, related to litter traits, as described in the scientific literature. Our results indicated that soil macro and mesofauna play a low role in the pine litter decomposition, where the organic material decomposition is more related to microorganism’s activity.

ABSTRACT Sustainable management of tropical and subtropical secondary forests for multiple purposes, including timber, may encourage farmers to promote regeneration of native forest. We studied the population structures and commercial timber production in two adjacent 33 years-old Brazilian Atlantic Forest stands: a 26 ha forest managed through enrichment with three fast-growing commercial timber species, and a 10 ha naturally regenerated unmanaged forest. The tree species presented basal area of 26.9 m2 ha–1 and 23.8 m2 ha–1 in the enriched and the unmanaged forest, respectively. Timber volume (DBH ≥ 15 cm) in the enriched forest was 104 m3 ha–1 (3.7 m3 ha–1 year–1 rate of increment), 67% of which from the species planted in the enrichment process. The unmanaged forest presented 78.4 m3 ha–1 of timber (2.4 m3 ha–1 year–1 rate of increment) (45% from the planted species). Timber volumes and DBH distributions of both stands suggest that selective harvesting could produce valuable timber now, while stimulating growth of the next cycle.

RESUMO Os efeitos do novo Código Florestal Brasileiro (CFB) - Lei Federal n. 12.651 (BRASIL, 2012) - ainda estão sendo avaliados e discutidos quanto à adequação de propriedades rurais à legislação ambiental, tanto nas questões de recuperação de áreas degradadas quanto em relação às possibilidades de uso sustentável das áreas de preservação permanente (APP) e de Reserva Legal (RL). O objetivo do trabalho foi construir e aplicar indicadores ambientais de avaliação para verificar o desempenho ambiental de propriedades rurais familiares, considerando alternativas que o produtor deve seguir para se adequar às legislações ambientais e, também, verificando as condutas favoráveis ao não cometimento de infrações ou crimes ambientais. Foram estabelecidos indicadores ambientais de avaliação propostos a partir de parâmetros da legislação, os quais foram utilizados na análise de propriedades rurais conduzidas sob sistemas de produção orgânica (SPO) ou convencional (SPC). As propriedades rurais conduzidas em SPO apresentaram melhores resultados quanto aos indicadores ambientais de avaliação tanto das áreas de RL quanto das APPs, predominando o caráter essencialmente preservacionista nas propriedades rurais. Houve baixa ocorrência de casos de manejo agroflorestal ou agroextrativismo tanto nas áreas de RL quanto de APP das propriedades rurais avaliadas nos dois sistemas de produção. Os indicadores ambientais construídos a partir da legislação ambiental demonstraram ser uma ferramenta eficiente, prática e de baixo custo, para os técnicos e agricultores assim como na identificação de situações positivas de manejo em relação à adequação às leis ambientais.

ABSTRACT There is an ongoing discussion about the effects of the new Brazilian forestry code (BFC) - Federal Law # 12.651 (BRASIL, 2012) - on the adequacy of small family farms, in terms of environmental degradation and recovery of forestry areas or regarding the possibilities of sustainable management of Permanent Preservation (PPA) or Legal Reserve (RL) areas. The aim of this work was to select and apply environmental evaluation indicators to analyze the environmental performance of small family farms, considering alternatives that the farmers should follow to comply with the laws and not to commit environmental crimes, in accordance with the Brazilian environmental legislation. We established environmental evaluation indicators taken from Brazilian environmental law parameters, which were tested in family farms with organic (SPO) or conventional (SPC) management systems. The organic family farms presented better results in terms of environmental evaluation indicators, either on APP or on RL areas Preservationist management was predominat on LR and on APP, in organic and in conventional production systems, and there were only a few occurrences of agroforestry systems or non-timber forest managements. The environmental evaluation indicators designed from aspects of Brazilian environmental law showed to be an efficient, practical and inexpensive tool to help technicians and farmers to identify positive situations of compliance to Brazilian environmental laws.

Os efeitos do novo Código Florestal Brasileiro (CFB) - Lei Federal 12.651/2012 - foram avaliados em relação à adequação de unidades familiares de produção conduzidas em sistema de produção orgânico (SPO) ou convencional (SPC). Foram estudadas 17 propriedades rurais do território Portal da Amazônia, quantificando-se as áreas totais, de preservação permanente (APP) e de reserva legal (RL), usando-se o Sistema de Informação Geográfica (SIG). Compararam-se os resultados com o que é exigido para o bioma Amazônia pelo novo CFB. A maior parte das propriedades avaliadas não apresentou o mínimo exigido para as áreas de RL e APP (nascentes e margem de córregos). As propriedades em SPO apresentaram melhores resultados em relação àquelas conduzidas em SPC quanto à manutenção da vegetação nativa nas APPs, além de um maior percentual de remanescentes florestais compondo a RL das propriedades. Tendo em vista consolidação das áreas desmatadas anteriormente a 22/07/2008, previstas no novo CFB, todas as dezessete propriedades sanaram seus passivos ambientais do ponto de vista da legislação brasileira atual para RL. No caso das APPs, todas as nove propriedades em SPO sanaram seus passivos ambientais, enquanto que no SPC isso ocorreu em quatro das sete avaliadas.

In order to evaluate the effects of Brazil's new Forest Code on the legal status of farm households, 17 farms, located in Portal da Amazonia territory, northern Mato Grosso state, and managed in either conventional specialized farm (CPS) or organic (OPS) production systems were studied. The total area per farm, as well as the surfaces of legal reserve units and preservation areas were measured by using Geographic Information System (GIS), to allow a comparison of these data with legal requirements for the Amazon Region. Most of the small farm households did not comply with the required percentages of land for Legal Reserve (LR) and Permanent Preservation Areas (PPA), in the latter case regarding riparian areas and areas for protection of water sources. Farms under OPS showed better results regarding preservation of native vegetation as well as higher percentages of forest remnants in their LR. Considering the amnesties and exemptions established by the New Forest Code, most farms have complied with the terms and requirements of current Brazilian environmental regulations.

RESUMO Este estudo teve por objetivo determinar critérios e parâmetros para o inventário e classificação das formações secundárias no estado de Santa Catarina. Foram realizados inventários florestais em 160 parcelas em quatro diferentes estágios de sucessão natural, em todas as formações florestais do Estado. Entre os resultados, propõe-se que os inventários, para fins de classificação, incluam todos os indivíduos da parcela que tenham ≥ 5 cm de DAP e que a área basal seja a pricipal variável analizada para a classificação da formação vegetal em estádios sucessionais. Também propõe-se a reavaliação dos parâmetros definidos pela atual Resolução.

ABSTRACT This study was designed to determine the criteria and the parameters needed for the inventory and the classification of the secondary forest in the Atlantic coast of Santa Catarina state, in Brazil. The forest inventories were conducted in 160 plots at four different stages of natural succession, in all forest of the state. It is proposed that inventories needed for the legal classification of secondary forests should include all individuals of each plot ≥5cm DBH and that basal area should be the central variable used to assign these forest formations in successional stages. This study also suggests the need to review the current regulation parameters in this place for the forest classification of Mata Atlântica defined by the current resolution.

A bracatinga (Mimosa scabrella Benth.) é uma espécie florestal de múltiplo uso, típica do ecossistema Floresta Ombrófila Mista, associado ao bioma Mata Atlãntica. Este estudo teve por objetivo comparar a estrutura, a diversidade vegetal e a ocorrência da bracatinga, entre bracatingais manejados e formações secundárias nativas. Foram realizados inventários florestais em 45 bracatingais (parcelas de 400 m²), com diferentes idades, e 40 áreas de florestas secundárias em diferentes estágios de sucessão natural (parcelas de 200 m²). Entre os resultados destaca-se que a estrutura demográfica da bracatinga e a diversidade das demais espécies apresentam padrões bastante diferenciados entre os bracatingais e as florestas secundárias, especialmente nos primeiros anos de desenvolvimento das duas comunidades vegetais. A expressiva diferença nestes padrões caracterizam os bracatingais como paisagens manejadas, sendo estes dependentes da ação humana para sua formação e manutenção.

Mimosa scabrella (Mimosa scabrella Benth.) is a multiple use forest species, typical from a mixed ombrophilous forest, asscociate to Atlantic forest biome. The objective of this study was to compare structure, vegetal diversity and occurrence of Mimosa scabrella among managed Mimosa scabrella woods and forest formations. Forest inventories were conducted in 45 plots (400- m² plots), at different ages, and 40 secondary forest areas at different stages of natural succession (200 m² plots). The results show that there are different patterns in the demographic structure of Mimosa scabrella and species diversity between the bracatingais and secondary forests, particularly in the early years of both communities development. The significant difference in those patterns characterize the bracatingais as managed landscapes, which are strongly dependent on human action for its formation and maintanance.

Os fragmentos florestais nas pequenas propriedades agrícolas de Santa Catarina fazem parte de um ciclo de cultivo de espécies anuais, através da agricultura de pousio (roça-de-toco). Neste estudo, procurou-se analisar o sistema de cultivo praticado pelos agricultores do município de São Pedro de Alcântara, litoral de Santa Catarina, utilizando a abordagem qualitativa. Como resultados, observou-se que em 65% das propriedades houve redução da área de cultivo nos últimos 10 anos, o tempo de repouso foi reduzido e as roças passaram a ser menos itinerantes. As restrições ao uso dos recursos florestais têm promovido alterações na composição da paisagem das propriedades agrícolas da região de estudo, onde se constata uma diminuição das áreas destinadas à agricultura de pousio e um aumento crescente das áreas com formações florestais secundárias, além do aumento da proporção de formações mais avançadas no processo de sucessão natural. Entretanto, uma simulação do uso da terra revelou que é possível, do ponto de vista da disponibilidade de áreas ao longo do tempo, a continuidade do sistema de pousio, principalmente quando este destina-se à subsistência.

The secondary forests in the small farms of Santa Catarina State are traditionally used as a component of the slash-and-burn agriculture. The purpose of this study was to analyze the agricultural system in the municipality of São Pedro de Alcântara, on the coast zone of the State, using the qualitative research approach. The results showed that there was a reduction of the cultivated area in 65% of the farms in the last 10 years, the fallow period was reduced, and the rotation time of each field plot was shortened. The restrictions imposed by regulations on forest resources use have contributed to a change in the composition of the landscape of the study area, where a shrinkage of the area used for traditional agriculture in favor of a larger area of with secondary forests is evident. However, a simulation of the field plots rotation revealed that, from the point of view of the land availability, the continuity of the slash-and-burn agricultural system is still possible in the long run, especially under the subsistence farming.

Verificou-se a resposta de crescimento à variação na intensidade de luz de plântulas de três espécies arbóreas da Floresta Tropical Atlântica, Cecropia glazioui Sneth., Cedrela fissilis Vell. e Bathysa australis (A. St.-Hil.) Hook. ex Sch., respectivamente de estádios inicial, intermediário e final de sucessão. As três espécies mostraram, dentro de um determinado gradiente de luz, plasticidade para aumentar a captação de luz quando em baixa irradiância (através de aumento da razão de área foliar -RAF e diminuição da razão entre raiz e parte aérea - R/PA) e plasticidade para aumentar o ganho de carbono e diminuir a transpiração quando em alta irradiância (através dos aumentos da razão R/PA e densidade estomática, e da diminuição da RAF). A plasticidade das espécies em variar determinado parâmetro em função da intensidade de luz foi dependente do gradiente de intensidade de luz aplicado. A plasticidade foi maior nas intensidades mais baixas de luz tanto para C. glazioui quanto para C. fissilis. Para a maior parte dos parâmetros analisados, C. glazioui mostrou maior parte plasticidade para aclimatar-se à maior irradiância, que C. fissilis. As variações apresentadas pelas espécies na morfologia e fisiologia em relação à variação na intensidade de luz são consistentes com o local de ocorrência de cada espécie.

The growth response of seedlings of three woody species from the Tropical Atlantic rain forest to changing light conditions was studied. The species were the early successional Cecropia glazioui Sneth., the intermediary in succession Cedrela fissilis Vell. and the late successional Bathysa australis (A. St.-Hil.) Hook. ex Sch. These species showed, within the range of light gradient, plasticity to increase light interception at lower light levels (through increasing leaf area ratio - LAR, and decreasing root/shoot ratio - R/SH); and plasticity to increase carbon gain and decreasing transpiration at high light levels (through increasing stomatal density and R/SH, and decreasing LAR). Species responses to irradiance varied with position along the light gradient. Plants at the lower end of the light gradient were more responsive than plants at the higher end of the light gradient. C. glazioui seemed to be more plastic than C. fissilis to alter several features. The behavior showed by the three species in response to changing light was consistent with their environmental occurrence.

RESUMO O processo de sucessão florestal secundária no Litoral de Santa Catarina é caracterizado por estádios sucessionais bem-definidos. Este trabalho foi realizado com o objetivo de caracterizar esses estádios em relação à riqueza de espécies, índice de diversidade (Shannon-Weaver), grupos de densidades, classes diamétricas, e área basal. O estudo foi realizado em uma área situada no município de São Pedro de Alcântara, localizado a 50 km de Florianópolis, com vegetação característica de Floresta Ombrófila Densa. Foram amostradas seis parcelas de 10x10 m em cada estádio sucessional, Myrsinietum 3 , Miconietum e Mata Secundária. Foram medidos todos indivíduos de espécies arbóreas e arbustivas com altura superior a 1 metro. O estádio de Myrsinietum, com grande dominância de Myrsine coriacea, se caracterizou pela baixa diversidade de espécies (H =2,09 nats), com muitos indivíduos de cada espécie nas classes de menor diâmetro (<10cm), refletindo em uma baixa área basal (6,99 m2/ha). No estádio de Miconietum, com dominância de Miconia cinnamomifolia, existe um grande número de indivíduos nas classes de até 20 cm de DAP, não passando de 35 cm, resultando em uma área basal de 33,67 m2/ha. Nesse estádio, verificou-se um grande número de espécies, com alta diversidade (H = 3,55 nats), das quais a maior parte é de ocorrência muito esparsa. No estádio de Mata Secundária, existe um grande número de indivíduos nas classes até 15 cm de DAP, mas com indivíduos até 52 cm, resultando em uma área basal de 39,11 m2. Nesse estádio, 50% das espécies é de ocorrência muito esparsa com um índice de diversidade (H) de 3,48 nats. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho não permitiram o enquadramento dos estádios sucessionais de Myrsinietum, Miconietum e Mata Secundária nos estádios de regeneração definidos pela Resolução n. 04/1994 do CONAMA. As características de cada estádio sucessional demonstram a grande dessemelhança existente entre o estádio Myrsinietum e os estádios Miconietum e Mata Secundária, tanto do ponto de vista estrutural como ecológico. Essas diferenças podem subsidiar estratégias, visando ao uso e à conservação dos recursos florestais.

ABSTRACT The forest succession process in the coast of Santa Catarina State, Brazil, is characterized by easily defined stages. In this paper the were characterized these stages regarding species richness and diversity index (Shannon-Weaver index - SWI), density groups, DBH distribution, and basal area. The study was carried out in the municipality of São Pedro de Alcântara, located 50 km from the state capital, Florianópolis, where the forest cover is typical of the Brazilian Mata Atlantica. Six 10x10 m plots were measured in each of the succession stages called Myrsinietum, Miconietum, and Secondary Forest. All individuals of tree and shrub species 1 m or taller were measured. The Myrsinietum stage, with a strong dominance by Myrsine coriacea, was characterized by a small species diversity (SWI = 2.09 nats), with many individuals of each species in the smaller DBH classes (<10 cm), resulting in a low basal area (6.99 m2/ha), despite the high density of plants. In the Miconietum stage, dominated by Miconia cinnamomifolia, there is a high number of individuals in the classes up to 20 cm in DBH, with maximum of 35 cm, resulting in a basal area of 33.67 m2/ha. In this stage, there was a high number of species with high diversity (SWI = 3.55 nats), most of them occurring sparsely. In the Secondary Forest stage, there is a high number of trees in the DBH classes up to 15 cm, but some individuals reached more than 52 cm, resulting in a basal area of 39.11 m2/ha. In this stage, 50% of the species occur very sparsely, with a diversity index (H) of 3.48 nats. According to the results of this study it is not possible to conform the succession stages of Myrsinietum, Miconietum e Mata Secundária with the regeneration stages defined by the Resolution nº04/1994 of CONAMA. The characteristics of each succession stage showed the large dissimilarity between the Myrsinietum and the other stages from the point of view of structure as well as ecological aspects. These dissimilarities can subsidize strategies of use and conservation of local forest resources.
